The Limousine: Some Facts and a Brief History of the Most Luxurious Automobile

When it comes to automobiles, the limousine is the epitome of luxury and style. Special occasions like weddings and other once in a lifetime events highlight the esteemed status of limos. When prom season rolls around, the privilege of driving mom and dad’s Volvo to prom is no longer appealing. Limousines are the only option when it comes to high-class and all-star appearances, even for teenagers.

So where did the limo come from, and how did the vehicle achieve its sterling reputation?

When thought of simply as a chauffeured vehicle, the limousine dates back to the 1700’s, when lavishly decorated horse-drawn carriages were used to transport the well-to-do from one place to another. The actual word, “limousine”, is thought to have originated from the French region of Limousin. Historians believe this is because of the resemblance between the covered portion of the vehicle and a popular style of cloak in Limousin. The distinguishing feature of limousines was that passengers enjoyed their privacy in a separate enclosure from the driver they employed.

In 1902, the first motorized limousine was produced, yet the driver of the vehicle was still forced to sit outside while the passengers enjoyed an enclosed compartment. At this point, limousines weren’t necessarily longer than regular cars, seating just 3 – 5 people. It wasn’t until 1928 that a Fort Smith, Arkansas company named Armbruster created the first “stretch” limousine. It’s initial primary use was to transport jazz celebrities and their big bands from gig to gig. As time went by, however,  other groups began to embrace larger seating areas, and “stretch” limousines became standard.

The rise of the movie industry and its stars, as well as drinking and driving laws that required a sober driver to be physically separated from the consumption of alcohol, caused the popularity of the limousine to explode. They became popular for airport transportation, funeral processions, and as the travel option of choice for the rich and famous. Today, the luxury stretch limousine remains all the rage. Stretch limo makers and designers now purchase popular car models from manufacturers and redesign them into custom-made limos. Hummer, Cadillac, and Rolls Royce are just a few of the luxury car companies that have transitioned into the stretch limo business over the years.

Since its inception, the limo has gone from a simple uncovered driver with a private covered carriage to the ride of choice for those who prefer to travel with comfort and class. From city to city, uptown to downtown, these glamorous vehicles have come a long way from their simple beginnings. As their deep-rooted history shows, limos are more than just a form of transportation.

With many different car models transcending the decades, chauffeured transportation has consistently communicated an air of wealth and status. From Rolls Royce carriages with open driver compartments, to sleek, modern party buses, the evolution of the limousine is varied. Unlike most cars, whose styles and adaptations are directly from their horse-drawn carriage predecessors, limousines were originally built as automobiles. In 1889, the first limousine automobile was introduced in Paris, France. The word Limousine, actually comes from the French word ‘limousin,’ which was a former province filled with farmland and shepherds. The locals adorned themselves in a traditional black cloak for body warmth on chilly nights spent in the French Countryside. The original Limousine had a closed passenger compartment with the driver exposed to the elements. The enclosed portion of the car was said to resemble the limousin cloaks worn by those countryside shepherds. It was then, the word limousine, to refer to chauffeured transportation, was born!

Lifestyles Of The Rich And The Famous

The symbol of luxury, status and high-class we associate with today’s limousines did not originate from their traditional use. Historically, limos were delivery vehicles, able to keep freight dry and safe from harm with the practical, enclosed section. It wasn’t until Woodrow Wilson rode in a chauffeured car, that  the limousine was used to transport important persons. The essence of the limousine has always been the separation between the passenger and the driver. The partition, if you will. As cars became more widely available, everyone came into possession of their own vehicle. It was then, that having someone drive you to and from your destination was considered luxurious. Having someone else drive you is quite the modern indicator of privilege.

After some thought, auto mechanics decided to cut one of the existing cars and lengthen its body. By separating the front of the car from the back with a partition, they hoped to make it more comfortable for passengers. The experiment turned out to be so successful that the creators of the first limousine did not sell it, but began to rent it out. The first limousines were created by American engineer Henry Leland. In 1902, he founded the automobile company Cadillac, and in 1917 he opened a company with the loud name Lincoln. The name was given in honor of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, for whom Henry Leland voted in his first election. Under the Lincoln brand, only executive class cars were produced. Initially, they were of very high quality, but they could not boast of external beauty. The situation was saved by the famous Henry Ford, who bought the company at 1920 and gave the cars an aesthetic beauty. Subsequently, Lincoln brand cars were used by US presidents for about 60 years.

Usually when people think of the word “limousine” they think of a white Lincoln. All limousines have a frame structure, because the carrier simply cannot support the weight of a long car. About 50 years ago, almost all cars were frame, so you could easily make a limousine out of them. Modern limousines are created outside the factories and are called "stretches". Some firms simply take any model on a frame basis, cut it in two and add an additional section in the middle. Add additional doors, windows, a partition between the driver and passengers and that's it - the limousine is ready.

Interesting fact: In German, the term Limousine is used to mean cars with four doors and a large number of side windows. As a rule, the rear windows of limousines are tinted. The word "limousine" itself comes from the name of the French settlement of Limousin. The fact is that the body of the first limousines looked like the hoods of local shepherds.

There is also the term Pullman-Limousine in German. This is what cars with three rows of seats and a partition inside the cabin are called. They got this name in honor of George Pullman, who built some of the most comfortable train cars in the middle of the 19th century. They had everything for a comfortable long-distance ride. Thus, the word "Pullman" began to be used as a designation for the maximum level of comfort.

The longest limousine in the world

The longest limousine is the 1991 Cadillac Eldorado, also known as the American Dream. To create it, engineer Jay Ohrberg had to put two 1976 limousines together. The famous Cadillac Eldorado is listed in the Guinness Book of Records, as its length is 30. 5 meters. It is equipped with two internal combustion engines and 26 wheels. The equipment of the car includes a swimming pool, a golf course, a jacuzzi and even a place for a helicopter landing. Yes, the real American dream.

Despite the release of the limousine, the company still ran into problems and Cadillac had to be sold to General Motors. Henry Leland did not despair and opened a new company called Lincoln Motor. Already in 1920, this company produced a luxury Lincoln limousine. Although the car was equipped with the latest technology, sales did not pay off production costs.

The reason for the failure was the ill-conceived design of the limousine - rich members of society were not eager to buy a car whose appearance left much to be desired. However, this was the case with all Leland's machines, because he was a practitioner to the core and beauty did not bother him too much.

This continued until the company was bought out by entrepreneur and reformer Henry Ford. It was from his submission that the limousine acquired a luxurious look not only inside, but also outside, thereby regaining its slightly lost popularity.

Limousines came to Europe a little later.

The production of these cars required not only financial investments, but also outstanding engineering work. The load-bearing body of European cars forced the developers to work hard - they had to disassemble the car completely. However, the work was crowned with success and the European companies Rolls-Royce and Mercedes rightfully earned a reputation as manufacturers of the most comfortable

limousines.
