A Tesla Model S stretch limousine goes up for auction [Update: might be a scam]

What is it with all those extreme Tesla Model S modifications lately? After a Model S with fuel cells and a new Model S station wagon, we are now seeing a Model S stretch limousine.

Update: We have received new information that leads us to believe that vehicle is in worst shape than they are leading us to believe. See the end for the update.

We reported on the project over a year ago when Costa Mesa-based Big Limos started working on the Model S.

At the time, they posted a video time-lapse of a perfectly good Model S being cut in half – cringe-worthy for Tesla enthusiasts.

Now we learn that the vehicle was built for an “advertisement project” and they didn’t even need to complete it for the project.

They describe it as 90% complete and they are auctioning it as is on eBay.

It has already received 17 bids for a top bid of $28,820 at the time of writing:

They wrote in the description of the auction:

“The worlds first Tesla Model S 85 Limo. The 2015 chassis is a S85 which cost $100,000 for the vehicle not to mention the cost to make an all aluminum conversion into a limo. This vehicle was built as a advertisement project and is 90% complete with only 150 original miles. The outcome was successful of the advertising project and the vehicle is now ready to be finished. Serious buyers and offers only.

Electrek’s Take

I would need to see the interior and make sure that it didn’t lose too many functionalities.

There’s no word on how they managed to pull it off yet and considering they had to removed the battery pack before stretching the chassis and all the wiring, they probably have a bunch of kinks to untangle in order to create this new wheelbase.

It’s why I’m not sure about their “90% complete” claim. From the pictures, it looks like there’s a good 10% worth of work on the exterior alone.

But with this said, I do like the idea of an all-electric limousine. We have seen several luxury car services increasingly adding Tesla vehicles to their fleets. There’s no reason why stretch limousines couldn’t also go all-electric.

Update: the bids went up to over $42,000 since we published, but now Jason Hughes, a prominent Tesla hacker and tinkerer, sent out a warning about the vehicle:

Not sure how to get this info to the right people, but the Tesla limo on eBay is a scam. Car doesnt drive. Wiring harnesses were sawzawed and unrepaired. Get the word out somehow… 😑

We reached out to Jason who said that the tried to help Big Limos in their project. He says that they cut through wiring harness when stretching and they haven’t been able to make it work after that.

They apparently tired to just color match the wire and power the vehicle back up, which caused more damage.

It sounds like that 90% complete claim could be a very optimistic way to look at it and it’s certainly not worth the ~$42,000 that people are now betting.
