European Ford Granada large executive car manufactured by Ford Europe since 1972 to 1994
The first generation model was produced from 1972 to 1976 at Ford's German plant in Cologne and at its British plant in Dagenham. In 1976, production was completely transferred to Germany. The original version was replaced in 1977 by a second generation model which was produced until 1985. From 1985 to 1994, the Granada name was only used in the UK and Ireland for the third generation model sold elsewhere in Europe. markets like the Ford Scorpio.

Mark I (1972–1977)
Launched in March 1972, the Granada replaced the British Ford Zephyr and the German P7-series as the European executive car offering and completed the integration of the British and German models. Ford rows.
At first, the junior models in the line were called Ford Consul. This may have been due to a lawsuit by the Granada Group, a major British conglomerate of the time; however, their request for an injunction was not appealed and they were unable to prevent Ford from registering the Granada name as a trademark. thus, since 1975 they have all been called Granada. The car soon became popular thanks to taxis, navy and police. It has also been converted into limousine and hearse versions by British companies Coleman Milne and Woodall Nicholson. Traditional four-door limousines (both long and short versions) were offered alongside the unusual four-door "limousine coupe" (only 12 built). as well as hearses in two- or four-door configuration.
Mechanically the British Granada followed Ford's convention, starting range using a Ford Essex V4 unit in 2.0 L displacement, and an Essex V6 engine in 2.5 and 3.0 L displacements. German models used the 1.7 L Ford Taunus V4 engine, or the 3.0 L Essex V6, or more commonly the 2.0, 2.3 or 2.6 L Cologne V6. The V4 was later replaced by the Pinto unit. The car as a whole followed the mechanical layout of its predecessors. Ford Zephyr/Zodiac, using an independent coil-spring rear end, although the front MacPherson struts were changed to the double wishbones introduced 18 months earlier in the smaller TC Cortina and Taunus. However, the Granada - like the Ford 17M/20M/26M - has drum brakes in the rear, as opposed to the Zephyr/Zodiac's rear disc brakes.
The car was available as a four-door. saloon, five-door property (Turner) and two-door fastback coupe. The early coupe (1972–73) had slightly different sheet metal—a more pronounced coke bottle style. In 1974, the coupe was redesigned with straighter lines. A two-door sedan was added to the range in May 1973. DM 415 reduction in advertised German entry-level car price, but a two-door saloon version was never produced or officially sold in the UK. The revised "straight rear wing" coupe was only sold in the UK in 3.0 Ghia trim, but it was sold in other trim levels elsewhere in Europe and all engines were available. This was the opposite situation with TK. Cortina and Taunus, where the British model had "coke bottle Style. In continental Europe, Granadas 1976-1977s were also offered with a 150 hp Cologne V6 injection engine. (110 kW).
- South Africa
In South Africa the Granada Perana V8, built by Basil Green Motors, was available through Ford dealers from 302 c. u. (4.9 L) Windsor V8 engine developing 255 hp (188 kW; 252 hp) and 405 N⋅m (299 lb⋅ft) at 2600 rpm. However, most Granadas in South Africa were fitted with the 3.0-litre six. A 2.5-liter V6 was also offered, although this model was discontinued at 19'75 as sales of the six-cylinder Cortina increased. The Granada was introduced in South Africa in late 1972 with the 3000 GXL automatic trim, followed by other models (3000 XL coupé 2500L). The coupe was the last planned model, scheduled for release in May 1973. The Granada replaced both the Australian Falcon (sold as "Fairmont" locally) and 20m of German origin.
Mark II (1977–1985)
The square and straight Granada Mark II was released in August 1977 and was produced until early 1985 after a slight facelift and attention to the powertrain. noise, vibration and harshness in 1981. The Mark II was essentially a redesign of the 1972 car, with new exterior panels that brought the Granada into line with the new Ford design language initiated by the stylist. Uwe Bahnsen, based on a style also used on the recently released Cortina/Taunus Mk IV and Mk I Fiesta. The wagon's rear panel is largely unchanged from the Mk I Granada, except for details. The design was very similar, with the main differences being the Cologne V6. The engine in 2.0, 2.3 and 2.8L versions replaces the older Essex unit and includes features such as air conditioning and, for the more expensive 2.8- liter versions - fuel injection. In mainland Europe, a 1.7-litre V4 was initially available. By the time of its introduction, production of the Granada in the UK had been quietly discontinued "for a while"; The UK Market Granada II were imported from Germany. Inside Ford, the Cologne 1.7, 2.0, 2.3 and 2.8 models were the last derivatives of the V-Taunus engine line.
Although most surviving Granada Mark IIs have a body-coloured facelift (1981) grille, earlier cars came with a plain black grille regardless of body color.
1979 Ford Granada L two door sedan (Mk II)0003
The coupé was discontinued when production of the new model began, although a two-door saloon version existed in some European markets. A relatively small number of cars were also produced with the Indenor four-cylinder diesel of 1.9, 2.1 and 2.5 liters. Originally only available as four-door sedans (later 2.5 versions also as station wagons), most went to taxi operators and few survived. The smallest 1.9was rather weak and was soon replaced by the slightly more powerful 2.1, which was introduced as the "Granada GLD" in March 1979 in Geneva. By 1982 it had been replaced by the more powerful 2.5.
Fuel injected 2.8 models were originally designed for 160 hp. and were offered with a unique "S" package (based on the L trim but with updated suspension, TRX wheels, tires and spotlights) or regular GL or Ghia trim. In 1979 the iS and iGL models were replaced by the 2.8i GLS. Today, early injectable models are especially rare. The 2.8i S immortalized the silver car used in the series. Sweeney . Changes for 1980 were limited to new colors and new, more comfortable seats.
The Granada was a strong seller in the UK, peaking in 1979 as the seventh best selling car with over 50,000 sales, and was also a top 10 seller in 1978 and 1982. It remained the best-selling car in the sector in the UK. throughout the production run despite competition from the likes of the Princess Leyland, the Rover SD1 and the Vauxhall Carlton.
In September 1981, the lineup received a facelift with larger round bumpers, a three-bar grille, redesigned instrument panel, redesigned taillights, and redesigned seats that improved rider and passenger comfort. Two-door sedan discontinued. A number of detail improvements were also made under the shell; the gearbox, clutch and brakes have been redesigned, semi-trailer rear suspension geometry has been changed and variable rate rear springs are standard across the range. In mainland Europe, the 1.7-litre V4 engine at the bottom of the range has been replaced by a more modern, but still revised, 1. 6-litre. Pinto engine. The British lineup began with a 2-liter four.
An even sportier Granada, the Granada 2.8 Injection, has been added to the range in most of Europe (some owners now mistakenly think it was called "Sport"; in fact it was always labeled "2.8 Injection" in marketing materials AND on the trunk lid), which featured metric-sized white alloy wheels with Michelin TRX tires, heavy-duty suspension, Recaro seats, deep front spoilers and trunk lids, colored bumpers, front spotlights, and darkened trim. This model used the same 2.8 injected engine, now downgraded slightly to 150 hp, commonly used in Ghia models. Near the end of the production run, the release of the 2.0 sedan and wagon and the 2.3 LX in the UK provided cheaper, slightly higher performance versions than the "base" L models. with diesel engine with the introduction of 2.5 D Ghia.
A special marketing edition of the Ghia X model, exclusive to the British company Ford, was later introduced as the "Ford Granada Ghia X Executive", which standardized luxury items such as the high-quality Connolly Leather interior, which had previously been optional equipment. Additional upgrades such as a power tilt and tilt sunroof, power trunk release in the interiors, power seat adjustment, heated seats, trip computer and air conditioning set the Granada Gia X outperforming most other comparable luxury cars available in the UK in the early 80s. X. A special "Taxi" version was only available in black with a foot-mounted "panic button" in the driver's footwell that activated the alarm system. In addition to these two models, the lineup was supplemented with utility models that reflected the same appointment levels as the entire sedan lineup, including the Ghia X but not the Ghia X Executive.
Ford commissioned Hyundai Motor Company to be assembled in South Korea for sales in that market, where it continued to be sold from October 1978 until 1986, when it gave way to the Hyundai Grandeur in place of smaller European Fords such as the Sierra and Escort. Production ended in December 1985 after 4,743 had been built. The car originally received a 2. 0-liter V6 engine with a twin-barrel Solex carburetor, but after 19In 1980, a more economical 2-liter four-cylinder engine became available. The Granada competed with the Saehan Record, as well as the Peugeot 604 imported by Kia Motors. Chung Mong Pil [ko], the eldest son of Hyundai founder Chung Ju-young, died in a car accident in Granada.
In addition, hearses were offered by outside converted companies, as well as a series of four-door limousines built by Colman Milne. These include the slightly stretched 15cm Minster and the longer 68cm Dorchester and the better equipped Grosvenor. From autumn 19The '82 Dorchester was also available in a station wagon version with extended tailgates, called the "Windsor".
Mark III (1985–1994)
in both Ireland and only the United Kingdom with a Scorpion badge (which covers the entire range in Continental Europe) is instead used as a trim designation for top-of-the-range models. The Mark III Granada was the first European production model to have anti-lock brakes as standard throughout the line. Voted European Car of the Year at 1986
Engine options included the familiar SOHC Pinto engine, either in tax barrier-reducing 1.8L form or a more powerful 2-litre version with available fuel injection. The Cologne V6 engines were carried over from the previous line in the short-lived (and not much more powerful than the 2-litre Pinto) 2.4L and 2.8L (later 2.9L). In 1991, a new maximum range car, the 24-valve Scorpio, was introduced. It was powered by a 2.9-litre Cologne engine which was extensively redesigned by Cosworth Engineering with four camshafts and 24 valves, enough for 200 hp. (150 kW). According to Ford, this gave a 0-100 km/h time of 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph (230 km/h).
This version of the Granada continued the "Ford family" styling concept of previous versions; This time the car looked like an enlarged version of the Cortina's successor, the model.
